Reflections on MLK jr. and Bill Buckley

Today marks the Th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr.. Today is also the funeral of William F. Buckley. Wow.

As a Reagan conservative, I mourn the loss of Mr. Buckley, but also the senseless assassination of Rev. King. To me they both represent the highest standards of both integrity and achievement, as well as role model for all Americans.

In this time of racial reflection, and of racial extremism, i.e. Rev. Wright, I long for the day when the black community will promote a leader who values all Americans and who uses Dr. King's credo, "not the color of their skin but the content of their character."

I think as Americans, not "hyphenated" Americans, we can all take pause to reflect on what Bill Buckley promoted, the arena of ideas, logic and result-oriented government, and the minimum moral standard and foundation of political thought in this country. Of the individual and of less government. Of empowering the individual, not the government, to succeed in life. The same things that Dr. King promoted.

My conclusion is that I believe that in the climate of today's politics and radical separatists, Dr. King would probably be labeled a house slave (not going to use the "n" word), as are Conde Rice, Colin Powell, Clarence Thomas, because he promoted throughout most of his sermons, "Conservative" behaviors and attitudes.

So, let us as conservatives continue to promote both Dr. King, and Bill Buckley's ideas. They are relevant to all Americans. Let us strive to end the divides that create the climate of fear and misunderstanding, and move towards the judgment of humans by the "content of their character." This is my dream.
